Combination of retrofit and new construction

Schenker Deutschland AG, the contract logistics provider in Eching responsible for upstream incoming goods to BMW’s Munich plant, faced capacity and performance shortfalls when its nearly 10‑year‑old automated miniload could no longer meet the new BMW model’s requirements. Schenker engaged Körber AG (Körber Supply Chain) to realign and upgrade its small‑parts warehousing to support just‑in‑time supply.

Körber AG delivered a combined retrofit and new‑construction solution: enlarging the miniload from 16,500 to 27,000 tray positions (adding two aisles to a 5‑aisle system), modernizing and adding SRMs, installing tote and a 50‑m pallet conveyor, and integrating IT/WinCC controls and dual‑camera safety systems. The upgrade increased storage capacity by 60%, boosted throughput by 80%, enabled up to 5,000 tray moves per day (350 double cycles/hour), reduced forklift traffic and ensured reliable just‑in‑time supply to BMW.
