How Infrabel was able to adopt data-driven decisions on trackbed maintenance with the potential to save 66% of tamping cost

Infrabel, the Belgian public rail infrastructure service provider, faced significant challenges with its trackbed maintenance. Its tamping practices were suboptimal, relying on fixed time-based schedules and repetitive actions rather than actual condition data, which sometimes even worsened track stability. To address this, Infrabel partnered with KONUX on a pilot using its KONUX Switch solution to gain better insights and improve maintenance planning.

KONUX installed its IIoT devices on multiple switches to enable data-driven monitoring, health prediction, and maintenance validation. The KONUX solution provided continuous, accurate data that revealed a large portion of tamping operations were unnecessary or ineffective. The pilot demonstrated that by using KONUX Switch for decision-making, Infrabel could achieve a potential 66% savings on its tamping operations while significantly improving trackbed stability.
