A Kong Case Study
Yahoo! Japan Corporation, the operator of more than 100 web services and over 70 billion monthly page views, faced slow service development and deployment, inconsistent redundant application functions, and limited visibility across thousands of APIs as it moved toward microservices. To centralize APIs and improve security, availability and performance, Yahoo! Japan selected Kong (using Kong’s API gateway along with message queueing and an on-premise FaaS implementation).
Kong was deployed as the single proxy and routing point with Kong plugins for authentication, multi-tenancy and scalability, plus FaaS integration and canary/circuit-breaker capabilities. As a result, Kong centralized authentication and authorization, enabled API discovery, supported canary releases and circuit breakers for safer rollouts, decoupled service development from platform operations, and saved developers hundreds of hours of redundant coding while improving overall developer productivity and service availability.
