A Kong Case Study
Verifone, a global leader in point-of-sale payments serving 150+ countries and handling more than 10 billion transactions a year, needed to evolve to an omnichannel payments platform that unified ecommerce and in‑store systems without disrupting service. The company faced a complex global architecture challenge: consolidate 20 regional monolithic payment systems, securely expose and govern APIs for microservices, standardize API documentation for developer adoption, and meet regional compliance and high-availability requirements. To address this, Verifone selected Kong (Kong Enterprise) as its API gateway and connectivity platform.
Using Kong Enterprise, Verifone centralized security, management and monitoring of all API traffic while moving to a microservices-based global payments system that supports on‑premise, cloud and hybrid deployments. Kong’s lightweight gateway, plugin architecture, workspaces and OpenAPI automation enabled centralized governance, rate limiting, and standardized API contracts. As a result, Verifone consolidated 20 regional systems into one global system, reduced TCO by 75%, sped time to market by 20×, and saved development teams hundreds of hours per month—while improving visibility, scalability and availability.
