Université de Lausanne moved from legacy to cutting-edge technology with Kong Enterprise

Université de Lausanne, one of Switzerland’s leading higher education and research institutions, needed to modernize a complex and distributed technology ecosystem serving students, teachers, and researchers. The university faced challenges around integrating disparate systems, managing API access securely, and improving interoperability across teaching and learning applications. To address this, it turned to Kong for API management and modernization support.

With Kong’s API platform, UNIL built a flexible abstraction layer to unify monolithic and microservice-based applications, streamline authentication and authorization, and simplify governance across its environment. Using Kong plugins such as OAuth2, ACL, CORS, Dynamic SSL, IP restriction, and monitoring tools, plus decK for automated configuration and lifecycle management, the university improved security, standardized API operations, and accelerated development. The result was a 60% reduction in operational costs and a more scalable, reliable, and unified API ecosystem across campus.
