A Kong Case Study
TUNE, a SaaS leader in partner marketing, needed to expand into the direct advertiser market but its legacy API was designed for affiliate networks and proved too complex for advertisers. Developer productivity was hampered because teams had to build and maintain API infrastructure at the application layer, and architecture limited team ownership and agility. TUNE selected Kong (Kong Enterprise) to standardize and expose a new external API and remove infrastructure burden from application teams.
Kong implemented Kong Enterprise as a service control platform running on Kubernetes in AWS, plus a Developer Portal and OpenAPI 3.0 standardization, using Kong’s Kubernetes Ingress Controller for configuration and deployments. This moved API logic to the networking layer, enabled vertical teams to own front-to-back services, and accelerated rollout (live in ~3 months). The result was architectural freedom and measurable impact: over 10X improvement in developer productivity and faster application of policies like OAuth and rate limiting with Kong.
