ANZ Unlocks Open Banking Innovation With Kong Konnect

ANZ, one of Australia’s Big Four banks, needed to modernize beyond a heavyweight on‑prem API gateway while migrating to the cloud and preparing for Australia’s Open Banking reforms, which introduced unpredictable traffic patterns and strict security requirements for sensitive financial data. ANZ selected Kong (Kong Konnect/Kong’s lightweight, deployment‑agnostic API gateway) to provide the flexibility and security required for its cloud‑native transformation.

Kong deployed a scalable, configuration‑driven API gateway (including an OpenID Connect plugin) into cloud‑hosted Kubernetes, enabling ANZ to throttle and scale with variable Open Banking demand, accelerate partner onboarding, and build an observability‑enabled “API Mesh.” The outcome was a successful cloud transition with faster service delivery, lower operational overhead, and unlocked innovation for new financial products and external partnerships — measurable improvements in agility, security, and operational efficiency delivered by Kong.
