Why ING upskilled auditors to use KNIME for data analytics & process mining

ING, a global financial institution with more than 57,000 employees and internal audit teams across 20+ countries, wanted to make audit work more data-driven, consistent, and efficient. Its auditors faced a wide range of topics, data sources, and document types across over 1,350 auditable entities, making it difficult to standardize analytics and keep lead times within required 8-10 weeks. To address this, ING turned to KNIME Analytics Platform and KNIME data apps.

With KNIME, ING/Internal Audit built reusable workflows and browser-based data apps for tasks such as OCR-based document review and process mining analysis. The solution automatically scans documents, flags missed or low-confidence text, cross-references names against sanctions lists, and supports process discovery and conformance checking through a simple guided interface. As a result, ING has expanded analytics use to about 65%-70% of audits annually with a goal of 80%-85%, and in some cases KNIME reduced an auditor’s work from three days to just 15 minutes.
