Leading university extends usage to boost data security and support HIPAA compliance, with Accellion

Pepperdine University, a private institution serving about 7,700 students across five schools, deployed campus-wide copiers with scan-to-email functionality but faced new security and HIPAA challenges: scanned documents often contained financial and personal data that could leave the network unencrypted, and IT needed a way to secure transfers without adding extra steps or disrupting user workflows.

To solve this, Pepperdine extended its existing Accellion secure file-sharing deployment by adding the Accellion SMTP Satellite to the copiers. Scans are forwarded to the Accellion appliance, which automatically encrypts files and issues secure download links, allowing users to access and share scanned materials as before while meeting HIPAA and data-security requirements—protecting scanned data for roughly 3,000 internal users and unlimited external recipients.
