Enhancing Knowledge Sharing Among State Tax Administrators and Industry with a Simple and Secure Information Exchange System

The Federation of Tax Administrators (FTA) coordinates best practices and information exchange among state tax agencies and the efile industry. As state-developed efile schemas began to include sensitive data to combat tax fraud, FTA needed a proven, enterprise-grade system that was easy to administer and would securely restrict access to authorized users while speeding collaboration between states and software vendors.

FTA selected Accellion’s FedRAMP-authorized secure file sharing platform, giving each state control over folders, encryption in transit and at rest, and two-factor authentication. Deployed in 2016 with individual licenses for contributors, the State Exchange System became a centralized “one-stop shop” for efile vendors and achieved near-universal adoption across income tax jurisdictions, improving efficiency, compliance and secure access for roughly 400 users.
