Managing and Scaling the Cloud for NASA’s National Assets

NASA’s Earth Science Data & Information System (ESDIS) needed a better way to manage and scale a multi-account AWS cloud environment as Earth science data volumes grew, with some missions generating about 80 TB of data each day. The team wanted to maximize user autonomy and flexibility while reducing duplication, complexity, and cost across shared cloud services and controls, and turned to Kion (then branded as cloudtamer.io) for cloud governance and management.

Kion provided continuous compliance, authentication and authorization controls, spend monitoring, budget enforcement, and self-service account management across NASA’s AWS accounts. With Kion, NASA was able to enforce security policies, support users from multiple identity systems, manage IAM roles at an organization level, and set budget caps to help ensure Antideficiency Act compliance. The result was a more scalable cloud operating model that streamlined access, improved governance, and helped NASA onboard customer accounts with different budgets, security boundaries, and access levels.
