Blended learning for leadership skills at Coats PLC

Coats PLC, the world's leading industrial thread and consumer textile crafts business, needed to build leadership capability from within after refocusing on product innovation. Facing the challenge of replicating interactive face-to-face learning for frontline and middle managers with little formal leadership training, Coats partnered with Kineo and The Oxford Group to design a global, scalable program that embedded manager coaching and real-world application.

The solution was an 18-month blended learning program combining a two-day kickoff workshop, short self-paced e-learning modules on eight core competencies, LMS-driven coaching triggers, persona-based scenarios, cohort groups with buddies, webinars and consolidation workshops. By July 2014, 280 managers had started the Management Capability Development (MCD) program with cohorts active worldwide, MCD integrated across regions, and the approach won a Brandon Hall Bronze award — with participants reporting improved management behaviour, productivity and team coordination.
