How a DC High School Transforms Lives Using Data-Driven Restorative Practices

Ron Brown College Preparatory High School, an all-male public school in Washington, D.C., faced the challenge of creating a new, positive school culture while supporting predominantly low-income young men of color who are often over‑represented in discipline statistics. The school needed to shift staff and student mindsets away from punitive approaches, reduce suspensions and expulsions, increase graduation prospects, and build data systems to measure the effectiveness of restorative practices. To track culture and behavior in real time, RBHS partnered with Kickboard and used the Kickboard platform to capture and analyze culture data.

Using Kickboard alongside a schoolwide Restorative Practices model, RBHS implemented proactive supports (summer bridge, PACE core values, daily community circles, staff training) and responsive protocols that log incidents in Kickboard, trigger instant Care Team notifications, and guide restorative interventions and repairs. Kickboard data lets leaders monitor positivity ratios weekly, intervene early, and tailor supports; as a result, Principal Benjamin Williams reports early success—90% of restorative efforts show no repeat behavior between parties—demonstrating measurable reduction in repeat incidents and more strategic, data‑driven supports.
