Case Study: BMW Group achieves reliable automotive Ethernet performance and protocol conformance with Keysight (Ixia) IxNetwork and IxANVL

Validating Automotive Ethernet Conformance and Performance

BMW Group needed to validate a new automotive Ethernet architecture—100BASE‑T1 and a shift to switched star topologies—ensuring PHY robustness, correct switch forwarding, and conformance of higher‑layer protocols such as AVB, TCP/IP and SOME/IP, as well as the performance of in‑car data loggers. To meet these challenges they worked with Keysight, using Keysight’s Ixia‑originated test products (IxNetwork and IxANVL) to run standardized and automotive‑specific test suites.

Keysight deployed IxNetwork to generate predictable, line‑rate multi‑port traffic and IxANVL for protocol conformance tests, enabling BMW Group to characterize switch performance and robustness, verify AVB/gPTP timing, and validate TCP/IP stack conformance to OPEN Alliance specs. As a result Keysight’s testing revealed data loggers dropping packets at high speeds, confirmed gPTP synchronization was within desired bounds, and provided measurable evidence of ECU and switch reliability and protocol compliance.
