Transforming RF Research and Teaching in a Major University

Japan Major University’s electrical engineering department needed a compact, easy-to-share vector network analyzer to support hands-on RF teaching and research—specifically for evaluating antennas and filters below 6.5 GHz. The challenge was to get benchtop‑caliber measurement performance (two- or four‑port capability, built‑in sources/receivers, low trace noise and high dynamic range) in a portable unit with a short learning curve so students and faculty could quickly adopt it. Keysight was chosen to meet these requirements.

Keysight supplied a Streamline Series VNA (P9371A) controlled via USB from a PC, delivering a benchtop‑equivalent GUI, portability, and the ability to link multiple units for multiport tests. The Keysight solution enabled easy sharing between labs, immediate user familiarity, and expanded test flexibility; measurable performance met the university’s targets (port power –40 to +7 dBm at 6.5 GHz, dynamic range –117 dB at 6.5 GHz, trace noise <3 mdBrms, stability 0.010 dB/°C) and electronic calibration (ECal) halved calibration time versus mechanical kits. As a result, a single Keysight unit is now shared across labs, supports multiport measurements, and is being integrated into advanced teaching and research workflows.
