A Keysight Case Study
ESEO (Ecole Supérieure d’Electronique de l’Ouest) faced the challenge of designing a 2.45 GHz rectenna to scavenge ambient RF for IoT devices — a task requiring an extreme impedance transformation (antenna tens of ohms to several kiloohms) and compensation for Schottky diode nonlinearity and forward-voltage limitations. To address these issues, ESEO (with STMicroelectronics) turned to Keysight and its Advanced Design System (ADS) for design and simulation support.
Using Keysight ADS co-simulation — combining the Momentum 3D planar field solver with the Harmonic Balance circuit solver, plus diode package parasitic models and layout tuning — ESEO optimized the antenna+rectifier “rectenna.” The Keysight-enabled solution delivered measurable results: DC output down to −20 dBm and a peak RF–DC conversion efficiency of 68% at 20 dBm input (validated with a ~20 mm patch antenna).
