Improving the Battery Life of Implantable Medical Devices

Leading Implantable Medical Device Designer Service Provider faced the challenge of accurately characterizing battery drain across very low hibernate currents and higher active currents for implantable devices, while meeting strict safety and compliance requirements and minimizing patient inconvenience. They engaged Keysight and evaluated its integrated battery-drain solution (N6705C DC Power Analyzer, N6781A 2‑quadrant SMU and 14585A control/analysis software) to measure and emulate real battery behavior across the device’s full operating profile.

Keysight implemented its N6705C/N6781A/14585A solution with patented Seamless Measurement (mA to A at 200 kHz, 28‑bit resolution), programmable series resistance, data logging and automated test scenarios, plus custom software for expanded emulation. As a result, the customer eliminated multiple instruments, built a predictive battery-discharge model that provides early low‑charge warnings, increased engineer productivity, improved patient safety and confidence in battery-life specifications, and plans to deploy the Keysight solution in additional labs.
