Component Manufacturer Uses Calibration to Detect Changes in Test System Measurement Uncertainty

Component Manufacturing Company, an industry-leading maker of filters for wireless devices, faced shrinking design margins and increasing measurement uncertainty that threatened production yield and quality decisions. To ensure S-parameter ripple deviation stayed within spec, the customer engaged Keysight, leveraging Keysight Calibration Services, a Keysight Electronic Calibration Module, and Keysight’s risk calculator to monitor system performance and detect drift or faults.

Keysight analyzed correction terms, identified a faulty connector, and after replacing it and recalibrating the system reduced measurement uncertainty from ±0.5 dB to ±0.2 dB. Using Keysight’s risk calculator, false passes fell from 1.56% to 0.92% (a 41% risk reduction), false fails dropped from 6.86% to 1.75% (a 74% decrease), and estimated annual costs were reduced by about 51%, enabling Component Manufacturing Company to justify the calibration investment.
