Completing Li-Ion Cell Self-Discharge Testing in Just Two Hours

The Major OEM of Electric-Vehicle Batteries Manufacturing Company was struggling with very slow Li‑Ion cell self‑discharge testing—traditional open‑circuit voltage methods took up to two weeks, threatening delivery schedules as production volumes and product mix grew. To address this, the manufacturer engaged Keysight and evaluated dedicated test hardware and software, including the Keysight BT2191A self‑discharge measurement system for R&D and the compact Keysight BT2152A self‑discharge analyzer with BT2155A analysis software for production.

Keysight implemented a potentiostatic closed‑loop measurement method that holds cell voltage and directly measures self‑discharge current, enabling the BT2152A to test up to 32 cells simultaneously and the BT2191A to deliver microvolt stability and nanoamp sensitivity for R&D. The result: Keysight’s solution reduced self‑discharge test time from two weeks to two hours and cut required temperature‑controlled storage on the production floor by about 80%, with the OEM now rolling the Keysight systems out to additional facilities.
