Creating an online store in three months and exceeding expectations

Marshalls PLC, the UK’s leading external landscaping business since the 1890s, was in the midst of a cloud-based digital transformation when COVID-19 closed its traditional builder‑merchant retail channels. Faced with an urgent need to enable direct consumer sales, Marshalls set a three‑month target to add commerce functionality to its B2C site and launch an online store.

They upgraded to Kentico Xperience 12 and used a headless architecture integrating PIM, DAM, search, payment and address verification, leveraging out‑of‑the‑box commerce features to build an agile MVP. Launched in May 2020, the store outperformed expectations—online revenue, traffic, average order value and product mix all exceeded forecasts within the first two months—and Marshalls is now extending capabilities with personalization, upsell/cross‑sell and AI enhancements.
