The company wanted a way to control spend without limiting employee choice of providers, and Kelly Benefits recommended a reference-based pricing (RBP) approach.
Kelly Benefits helped the company implement RBP as an option for a subset of employees, supported by legal services and a communications campaign to build understanding and confidence. The plan also featured lower deductibles and coinsurance than the traditional offerings. Enrollment grew from 40% in year one to 65% in year two, and the company saw major savings: facility claims dropped from nearly $1M to just over $300K per month, non-facility claims were cut roughly in half, and annualized savings were projected to exceed $3M.
