A Kefron Case Study
St James’ Hospital, the Republic of Ireland’s largest acute teaching hospital, faced growing pressure from ballooning paper patient records (40,000–60,000 new files a year), limited storage space and new HSE records-management policy requiring faster, more secure access to records. To move toward an electronic patient record (EPR) system and improve patient-safety decision-making, the hospital engaged Kefron to deliver a comprehensive records-digitisation and information-management service.
Kefron provided an end-to-end solution—onsite cataloguing and barcoding, satellite-tracked collection, scanning and indexing, secure shredding with certificates, and a hosted EDMS integrated with Cerner Millennium (using Therefore) accessible to 300+ users. By mid-2011 Kefron had scanned some 41,000 files (about six million pages), cutting average retrieval time from ~15+ minutes for paper to 1–2 minutes electronically, freeing primary storage space, delivering substantial cost and labor savings, and enabling secure, auditable access and same-day physical retrieval service when needed.
