Preview of the Large US Utility Service Provider Case Study

North American Utility Energy Imbalance Market Participation Saves USD 30.5 million

A large US Utility Service Provider, a Western EIM participant serving over 1.2 million customers, wanted to improve efficiency and savings by monitoring and analyzing unit performance more effectively in real time. With limited tools to compare generation against market instructions, the utility turned to KBC A Yokogawa Company for help, building on an existing relationship for PI-based monitoring and situational awareness solutions.

KBC A Yokogawa Company created a customized Fossil Unit Monitoring tool using the OSIsoft PI AF structure, PI Vision, and BA Integrator to provide one-minute performance data, reporting, and real-time visibility across the organization. The solution helped the utility close gaps between actual generation and market targets, reduce uninstructed energy imbalance charges, and achieve USD 30.5 million in savings, with more than USD 71.5 million in benefits since joining the Western EIM.
