Case Study: an international energy company improves mercury management accuracy with KBC Petro-SIM and Multiflash

A KBC A Yokogawa Company Case Study

a international energy company predicts mercury at 1.5 µg/Nm³ with KBC

An international energy company faced a challenge while designing a complex floating production facility. Their existing process simulator incorrectly predicted how trace mercury would partition in multi-phase streams, creating risks for corrosion, safety, and product compliance. To address this, they turned to KBC A Yokogawa Company for a more robust and thermodynamically sound approach.

KBC implemented a solution using its Petro-SIM software integrated with Multiflash and a dedicated mercury model. This provided an accurate picture of mercury behavior, confirming its presence in hydrocarbon streams—which the original model missed—and predicting its distribution. Results showed export gas remained within specification, but condensate levels exceeded it, allowing for early mitigation planning. The model also identified specific opportunities to remove up to 500 g/h of liquid mercury and 10 g/h of a solid-liquid mixture, enabling the client to make safe, compliant, and cost-effective design decisions with greater confidence.
