Using Video to Break Down Learning Barriers

The National University of Ireland – Galway, which serves more than 17,000 students, had adopted Blackboard Learn campus-wide and saw growing demand from staff to use video in teaching. The university lacked the storage capacity and IT resources to manage video centrally, and interim or third-party solutions (YouTube, Vimeo, iTunes U, HEAnet) either compromised privacy or proved clunky and hard to use.

NUI Galway implemented the hosted Kaltura video platform and integrated its Video Building Block into Blackboard (campus-wide in January 2012), giving staff an easy way to record, edit, upload and control access to videos. Faculty report clear gains—conference interpreting students get better feedback from recorded sessions, and physics students benefit from 21 short experiment videos and seven equipment guides that clarify manuals and save lab time—while the university expands to Kaltura MediaSpace and a SharePoint video extension with strong vendor support.
