Using Video as a More Intuitive Way to Teach Students

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, founded in 1880, is a forward‑thinking university that had used video in teaching for decades but faced storage limits and the imminent end of its existing video service. Needing a modern, Blackboard‑integrated platform that fit their budget and institutional workflows, VU formed a committee to find a replacement that could scale campus‑wide.

VU selected Kaltura’s cloud SaaS video platform and rolled it out via library‑led onboarding, FAQs and demos. The solution provided deep Blackboard integration, admin analytics and privacy controls, enabling departments like medical/dental to migrate archives and safely share patient interactions, while students received unlimited upload access. The result: a surge in faculty- and student-produced video, new teaching practices (including early adoption of Kaltura’s MediaSpace campus portal), and measurable improvements in engagement and course materials.
