Pompeu Fabra University Creating Material in Catalan Sign Language

Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), a leading public university in Barcelona, needed to develop teaching materials for Catalan Sign Language (LSC) to support its unique undergraduate specialization in sign language interpretation. The main challenge was the scarcity of research and ready-made materials — and a specific need for interactive, self-grading exercises so students could get immediate feedback while practicing comprehension and grammar.

UPF partnered with its La Factoria media service and used the Kaltura platform to record LSC lessons with optional Catalan subtitles and build the first-ever interactive sign-language exercises: students watch signers tell stories, answer multiple-choice questions on the platform, and receive immediate signed feedback with retries. The pilot produced videos and comprehension modules (fables, senses, geography), has shown excellent early results, is available to students and externally online, and was developed collaboratively with a bilingual school and educational services with plans to expand internationally.
