Houston Community College Fueling Student Learning with Video for 12+ Years

Houston Community College (HCC), a large community college serving about 71,000 students and 145 countries, wanted to extend its educational mission beyond campus by using video to strengthen ties with the surrounding community and to get students actively engaged in community storytelling and outreach. The challenge was to make campus knowledge and student work widely accessible, inclusive, and useful to local partners while integrating video into teaching workflows.

HCC leveraged Kaltura’s video platform—integrated into Canvas with MediaSpace (EduTube), REACH captions, interactive video quizzing, lecture capture and 360/VR support—to launch a Digital Storytelling program, record lectures and performances, and create public-facing media galleries. The results include thousands of media entries and millions of player impressions (e.g., 6,493 entries played 67,029 times in Fall 2017 and ~2,020,000 annual impressions), over 400 students contributing to storytelling projects, 87 trained faculty/staff, new community partnerships (including hosting content for the University of Houston), and tangible community initiatives such as Harvey listening stations—deepening community connections and widening access to HCC’s educational resources.
