Bank Indonesia validates Digital Rupiah across 20+ wholesale CBDC use cases with Kaleido

Bank Indonesia, the central bank of Indonesia, partnered with Kaleido to validate its wholesale Central Bank Digital Currency, the Digital Rupiah, as part of Project Garuda. The challenge was to determine if a permissioned distributed ledger could meet the operational, scalability, and privacy requirements of a systemically important wholesale payment network while maintaining interoperability with existing domestic financial infrastructure.

Kaleido served as the core infrastructure provider, designing and deploying a customized CBDC platform to test issuance, transfer, and redemption workflows. The solution was used to validate over 20 wholesale CBDC use cases and two different protocol options with the participation of more than ten commercial banks. This extensive testing phase successfully demonstrated the viability of the Digital Rupiah for modernizing Indonesia's core monetary and settlement infrastructure.
