MTC launches open-source API Gateway with Kalamuna, delivering 550M calls per year

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) needed to modernize its end-of-life API proxy system, which aggregated real-time transit and traffic data for the San Francisco Bay Area's 511.org gateway. The challenge was to replace this unreliable legacy system with a secure, maintainable, and accessible solution without disrupting service to millions of commuters. Kalamuna was brought in to lead this conversion to an open-source platform.

Kalamuna developed a new open-source API Gateway using Tyk, creating 24 custom APIs and Go-based middleware to replicate and enhance the old system's functionality. The solution included modern CI/CD processes, comprehensive documentation, and robust monitoring. The results were immediate, with MTC reporting easier maintenance and accessibility compliance post-launch. The new system reliably handles over 550 million API calls per year, empowering commuters with accurate real-time transportation information.
