Crossrail nurtures innovation with project extranet from Kahootz

Crossrail, Europe’s largest infrastructure programme (£14.8bn, 40 construction sites and 42 km of new tunnels), needed a way to capture and manage innovation across a large, multi‑organisational delivery chain. To nurture a culture of innovation and enable secure collaboration between Crossrail staff and Tier 1 contractors, Crossrail built the Innovate18 portal using the Kahootz project extranet framework.

Kahootz delivered secure, customisable online workspaces, activity emails and fine‑grained access controls that now support more than 800 users across Crossrail and nominated partners, making it easier to share sensitive documents and match ideas to funding. The platform boosted engagement across teams (including communications and legal) and helped surface tangible outcomes—such as funded research into a lightweight concrete up to 25% lighter—demonstrating measurable impact driven by Kahootz.
