University lecturer shares research showing the learning benefits of Kahoot! in medical education

Helwan University Medical School in Cairo, Egypt, wanted a better way to engage first-year Pathology students, support continuous formative assessment, and improve motivation and academic performance. Using Kahoot!, lecturer Dr. Fatma Alzahraa Abdelsalam Elkhamisy introduced asynchronous and synchronous challenges after lectures to make studying more interactive and less overwhelming for medical students.

Kahoot! helped the school turn lecture review into a competitive, self-paced learning experience that students could complete at home or in class. The results were strong: students’ understanding of Pathology concepts improved by 83.6%, knowledge retention by 87.3%, and motivation and enjoyment of learning by 89.1%; more than half of Kahoot! users earned an A grade versus one third of non-users, and over 90% said their interest in Pathology increased.
