Mastering internet basics in 6 weeks with Kahoot

Barnsley Council’s Digital Champion Jenni Jarvis faced the challenge of teaching internet basics to adults — including many with no prior experience using tablets or computers — in a six‑week Online Basics course. To make sessions less intimidating and more engaging, she and her team incorporated the Kahoot! game‑based learning platform into presentations, practical tasks and Learn My Way modules to introduce learners to tapping, navigating and basic online tasks.

By adding Kahoot! quizzes mid‑course, Barnsley Council created a low‑stress, hands‑on way for learners to practice device skills and recall key concepts; features like images, timers and leaderboards kept both hesitant and confident participants involved. The use of Kahoot! led to noticeably higher engagement, helped reluctant users become comfortable with touchscreens, and supported learners in meeting course goals such as accessing information online, using email and improving digital confidence (qualitative outcomes reported by the instructor).
