A Kaggle Case Study
Since 2012 Facebook has partnered with Kaggle to run targeted data‑science recruiting competitions designed to mirror specific job descriptions. Challenges have ranged from predicting missing links in anonymized social graphs to modeling changing Internet topology and tagging six million StackExchange posts, letting candidates tackle the kinds of problems they would face on the job.
The contests drew thousands of entries (for example, 3,550 entries in the first 35‑day challenge) and revealed technical skill, creativity and persistence beyond what resumes or interviews alone show. Winners submitted code and resumes and were invited to interview; Facebook has successfully hired participants from every recruiting competition, creating a reliable pipeline of top data‑science talent.
