How LATAM publisher El Comercio increased views & revenue with a new video strategy

El Comercio, the 181-year-old Peruvian publisher, faced the challenge of monetizing a rapidly growing online audience and a library of 30,000+ videos while trying to boost video revenue from 4% to 10% and increase video views 40% year-over-year. To reach those goals it switched to the online video player JW Player in early 2021, seeking scalable ways to expand reach and ad revenue across its eight editorial sites.

By deploying JW Player’s Recommendation Engine to surface curated follow-on videos, using built-in Header Bidding (Player Bidding) to access more programmatic demand, and enabling ad pods with extra pre-rolls and mid-rolls, El Comercio increased plays by 63.81% and ad impressions by 107.44% (measured Jan–Sept 2021). Video revenue grew 90% YoY, with JW Player responsible for roughly 60% of that growth.
