A JusticeText Case Study
The Connecticut Division of Public Defender Services, specifically Assistant Public Defender Stephanie O'Neil, faced the challenge of manually reviewing high volumes of digital evidence like body-cam footage and voicemails. This process was extremely time-consuming and often resulted in inaccurate, handwritten transcripts, as obtaining affordable third-party transcriptions was difficult. This inefficiency hampered their ability to thoroughly prepare for hearings and trials while advocating for their indigent clients.
The public defender's office implemented JusticeText, a platform that provides automated transcripts and timestamping for audio and video evidence. Using JusticeText, Stephanie was able to rapidly review files, such as 14 last-minute voicemails, to pinpoint crucial evidence. This preparation directly led to a successful motion that resulted in all charges against her client being dismissed. The measurable impact was so significant that the state purchased 75 licenses for JusticeText to equip approximately a third of its staff.
