Case Study: Peninsula Regional Medical Center achieves secure, low-disruption SSN-to-MRN conversion with Just Associates

A Just Associates Case Study

Preview of the Peninsula Regional Medical Center Case Study

Relying on a Social Security Number Presents Risks Successful Conversion to a MRN Requires Thorough Planning

Peninsula Regional Medical Center (Salisbury, Maryland), a 366‑bed tertiary care facility, needed to stop using Social Security numbers and switch to system‑generated medical record numbers (MRNs) to better protect patients from identity theft and fraud without disrupting patient care or business processes. To manage the complex conversion across more than 25 downstream systems, Peninsula retained Just Associates for their patient identification management expertise and data migration consulting services.

Just Associates conducted a comprehensive assessment of the interface engine and every downstream system, traced how the patient identifier moved through registration, clinical, ancillary and financial workflows, ranked systems by risk, and provided targeted conversion plans. JA designed and ran automated conversion scripts, developed error‑trapping and test scripts, and validated accuracy across systems—reducing IT workload and staffing costs, minimizing workflow disruption, and enabling a cost‑effective, accurate MRN migration while giving PRMC a clearer understanding of organizational data flows.
