Establishing Optimal Cerner Registration System Settings Reduces Patient Record Duplication

Shore Memorial Hospital, a 296‑bed not‑for‑profit acute care hospital in Somers Point, NJ, migrated from a legacy registration system to the Cerner Millennium Registration application and discovered widespread Master Patient Index (MPI) issues—many “unknown” or duplicate patient records—raising concerns about data integrity across their Cerner enterprise. To validate the conversion and investigate ongoing duplicate creation, Shore Memorial engaged Just Associates to assess the scope and root causes of the problem.

Just Associates conducted a technical, system‑specific data analysis and data migration consulting engagement, identifying a significant number of potential duplicate pairs and tracing many duplicates to suboptimal Cerner configuration settings. Just Associates recommended and helped validate adjusted Cerner settings, provided knowledge transfer to HIM and IT staff, and supported duplicate reconciliation; as a result, Shore Memorial has reduced ongoing duplicate creation, is actively correcting identified duplicates, and is in a stronger position to support Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) data exchanges thanks to Just Associates’ work.
