A Juniper Networks Case Study
Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec), one of New Zealand’s largest polytechnics, needed to modernize its campus IT to support competency‑based, project‑based learning and widespread BYOD use. The challenge was to saturate six campuses with high‑quality Wi‑Fi, adopt infrastructure‑as‑a‑service by moving internal services to the cloud, and build a more open, scalable, carrier‑grade network to deliver an Internet‑centric learning experience.
Wintec deployed Juniper MX edge routers, WLC/WLA wireless gear and EX3300/EX4500 switches, migrated most services to the cloud and re‑architected its WAN around Internet “fat pipes.” The result: a 500% rise in Wi‑Fi users (peaks ~1,600–1,700), higher student IT satisfaction, rapid rollout of new services (300+ services virtualized), strong BYOD support and scalable, carrier‑grade capacity upgradable to 80 Gbps.
