UK University Builds a Secure New Network Platform for the Next Decade

The University of Hertfordshire, a research-led UK university supporting over 25,300 students and 2,700 staff across two campuses, needed to replace a 10-year-old network that could no longer cope with growing data volumes, widespread BYOD, and the university’s “online anywhere, anytime” services. The priorities were increased capacity and performance, secure mobile access without risking core systems or user data, improved management and fault tolerance, and a migration approach that would not disrupt critical online services.

Working with Juniper Networks (via the Janet procurement framework) and partner Alternative Networks, the university deployed SRX Series firewalls, EX Series switches (including Virtual Chassis technology) and the Junos Space management platform. The rollout raised core capacity from 1GbE to 10GbE, improved multicast and performance, was completed without affecting users, and included knowledge transfer that left the IT team self-sufficient—providing a secure, scalable foundation for future mobility, security and analytics enhancements.
