Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council Saves Money Through Successful Bring Your Own Device Strategy with Juniper Networks

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, a U.K. local authority serving about 200,000 residents, faced a mandate to reduce office occupancy and cut space, cost and carbon by 30% vs. 2011. With a 2,500-strong workforce and hundreds of sensitive council applications, the council needed a secure, Windows/Mac-compatible remote-access solution that delivered a full desktop experience and supported a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) strategy.

They deployed Juniper SA4500 SSL VPN appliances, Junos Pulse and SRX gateways to provide browser-based or client VPN access with no data stored on personal devices. Around 12–15% of staff now work remotely, reporting higher productivity and faster decision-making; the council has realized ongoing equipment and operational cost savings (staff returning corporate devices), greater flexibility and resilience in adverse conditions, and a future-proof BYOD capability.
