Securing The Marine Institute, From Headquarters to Undersea Observatory

The Marine Institute, Ireland’s national agency for marine research, operates data‑intensive programs including the SmartBay subsea observatory that streams real‑time sensor data to researchers and commercial partners. It needed to protect sensitive data and provide more granular, role‑based access across a diverse environment—offices, research vessels, mobile staff and an undersea IoT platform—while opening specific ports for partner devices without exposing other systems.

Working with Agile Networks, the institute deployed Juniper SRX1500 gateways managed by Junos Space Security Director and Juniper Sky Advanced Threat Prevention to deliver unified threat management, centralized policy control and cloud‑driven malware detection. The result is a secure, flexible network that staff can self‑administer, enforces fine‑grained access for partners, and provides early warning and quarantine of rogue traffic before it can cause damage, giving the institute a future‑proof security platform.
