Russia’s Mail.Ru Meets Huge Demand and Simplifies Data Center Design with Juniper Networks

Mail.Ru, a leading Russian Internet company serving millions of users across email, social networks and online games, was experiencing rapid double‑digit growth and needed an always‑on, scalable data center network. Legacy two‑tier switches and Spanning Tree Protocol caused inefficiencies and downtime risk during unpredictable, high‑traffic events (like game updates), while the company’s small operations team required a simpler, more reliable design.

Mail.Ru deployed Juniper MX960 core routers and EX4200 switches (in Virtual Chassis configurations) using MC‑LAG and a single Junos OS to consolidate core/gateway functions, increase port density, and eliminate STP bottlenecks. The new design simplified operations, reduced data center footprint, and maximized capacity for peak traffic—delivering improved stability, reduced congestion and packet loss, and 100% uptime to date.
