New Zealand’s Research and Education Service Provider Leverages Juniper Networks to Help Turbocharge Genetic Analysis

REANNZ, New Zealand’s research and education network, partnered with New Zealand Genomics Ltd to solve a critical bottleneck: reliably moving 4 TB+ gene-sequencing data sets between sequencing sites and a central data center. Campus gateway underinvestment meant traffic was forced through enterprise firewalls (“straws”), causing slow, lossy transfers that trigger TCP congestion control and dramatically reduce throughput.

REANNZ implemented a ScienceDMZ-style, high-capacity firewall bypass using Juniper MX80, EX3300 and SRX650 hardware running Junos to provide a secure, low‑latency, lossless 10 Gbps on‑ramp. The new design delivered a fourfold increase in end‑to‑end transfer rates to the U.S., streamlined WAN/LAN management, greatly improved researcher experience and productivity, and established scalable infrastructure to support continued growth in genomic research.
