LG U+ Deploys First Carriergrade NFV Router in Korea to Accelerate Evolution to 5G

LG U+, a leading South Korean telecom operator, needed a flexible, highly reliable networking platform to prepare for 5G and meet rising customer expectations. The company faced the challenge of adopting Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) despite concerns about the technology’s maturity and commercial-grade stability, while also wanting to reduce costs and speed service creation and delivery.

LG U+ selected Juniper’s vMX virtual router with virtual route reflection and OpenStack-based orchestration, running on off‑the‑shelf servers. After successful proofs of concept, the carrier deployed the solution in production—becoming the first in Korea with a carrier‑grade NFV router—and achieved carrier‑grade stability (failure rate <1/1,000,000), faster 5G service rollout, greater routing agility and DDoS protection, rapid virtual-router deployment, and lower operational costs through dynamic resource allocation.
