Indonesia’s XL Axiata Prepares for Meteoric Growth in Mobile Data

XL Axiata, Indonesia’s second-largest mobile operator, faced a surge in mobile data demand as it rolled out 4G LTE—growing to over 8,000 base stations and expanding into nearly 100 cities by 2016. The company needed a cost‑effective, simple, and highly scalable mobile backhaul architecture to support traffic that was more than doubling year‑on‑year and to accelerate nationwide 4G coverage.

XL partnered with PT Lintas and Juniper Networks to deploy ACX2200 and ACX5000 access routers and MX80/MX960 routing platforms, supported by Juniper Professional Services for design and knowledge transfer. Phase one put ~500 routers into service, delivering a streamlined, reproducible backhaul template that reduced CapEx and OpEx, scaled to meet forecasts, and set the stage for rapid expansion (another ~2,000 routing platforms planned).
