High-Performance Juniper Infrastructure Enables 1:1 Learning at Union County Schools

Union County Public Schools, a rapidly growing district near Charlotte serving about 42,000 K–12 students, needed to refresh and secure its overloaded network to support a district-wide 1:1 learning rollout of 22,597 Chromebooks. With the existing infrastructure running at over 60% utilization, the district required a high-performance, reliable, and secure solution with low total cost of ownership to handle massive concurrent video streaming, protect students, and meet compliance requirements.

UCPS deployed a Juniper solution—EX4500/EX4200/EX3300 switches, MX240 router, SRX1400 gateway, IDP8200 IPS, MAG4610 VPN gateway and STRM2500—to increase bandwidth tenfold and double Internet capacity. The new infrastructure supported the 1:1 initiative (about 24,000 devices), stopped a large DDoS attack (15 million hits every five minutes) with Juniper support onsite, improved performance, simplified operations under a single Junos OS, and lowered TCO.
