Converged 100GbE Optical IP Integration Scales Sweden’s National Academic Network

SUNET, Sweden’s national academic network serving more than 30 universities, colleges and 100 research institutions, faced end‑of‑life optical equipment, a dark‑fiber contract renewal, and rising traffic demands. The organization needed a more scalable, resilient and cost‑effective network that supported open standards and avoided vendor lock‑in while containing operational costs as traffic grew.

SUNET deployed a converged IP‑and‑optical solution from Juniper (MX2020/MX2010/MX960/MX480 with integrated 100GbE coherent optics) over ~8,000 km of dark fiber with Adva DWDM gear and IPNett integration. The integrated approach eliminated separate transponders, enabled a grid‑less DWDM domain and automated provisioning, delivering a network more than ten times faster, about 20% lower operational costs, greater availability and a scalable path to multiple 100GbE and future terabit links.
