Case Study: LAMPS advances energy and finance optimization with Julia Computing

A Julia Computing Case Study

The Laboratory of Applied Mathematical Programming and Statistics (LAMPS) uses Julia for applied optimization research in energy and finance

LAMPS, the Laboratory of Applied Mathematical Programming and Statistics at PUC-Rio, needed a faster and more practical way to build and teach optimization models for energy and finance after struggling with language integration, licensing issues, and limited performance in Matlab and other mathematical interfaces. Julia Computing’s Julia programming language emerged as the best fit for their research, teaching, and industry projects.

With Julia Computing’s Julia, LAMPS moved first into teaching and PhD research, then into fully Julia-based R&D work with industry. The lab now uses Julia for hydrothermal dispatch, optimal power flow, renewable generation simulation, robust portfolio management, and energy market modeling, while teaching more than 100 students each year and training over 50 industry professionals.
