A Julia Computing Case Study
QuantEcon, founded by Nobel Laureate Thomas J. Sargent at NYU, uses Julia Computing’s Julia platform for teaching and research in quantitative economics. Their challenge is that next-generation macroeconomic models are highly computationally intensive, with large datasets, many variables, and complex optimization problems that are difficult to solve in high dimensions.
Julia Computing provided Julia, which QuantEcon uses for macroeconomic modeling and contributions to the Julia ecosystem. The result is a faster, more practical way to solve discrete dynamic programs and advanced Bellman-equation-based models, enabling the team to tackle complex policy analysis and financial-crisis modeling more effectively. While no numeric metrics were given, Professor Sargent described Julia as essential and “a great tool” for these problems.
